Donald Miller is the CEO of StoryBrand and every year helps more than 3,000 business leaders clarify their brand message. Combined, Don’s books have spent more than a year on the New York Times Bestsellers list. Don is widely considered one of the most entertaining and informative speakers in the world. His audiences are challenged to lean into their own story, creatively develop and execute the story of their team, and understand the story of their customers so they can serve them with passion.
Ahead of his presentation at Nordic Business Forum 2019, we spoke to Don about what our central theme growth means to him.
Nordic Business Forum: What does “growth” mean to you?
Donald Miller: It means transformation. Every business leader and every business, for that matter, transforms into better and better versions of itself. Healthy organizations, just like healthy people, grow. So I’m always asking myself, how can I become a better version of myself?
NBForum: What has growth looked like in your profession and/or personal career?
DM: My company has transformed 3 times, and we are about to transform again. We maintain the same quality and the same service, but we adapt to feed the market. For me, growth hasn’t only been financial, though, it’s also been intellectual. At least 3 times per year, we bring in trainers to teach us something new. We want to keep growing as individuals so we can keep growing as a company. A company can not grow faster than its people are willing to grow themselves.
NBForum: What factors do you think your industry needs to prepare for when we talk about “growth” and the future?
DP: My company serves small to mid-cap businesses and those businesses need access to training and learning that is easy, manageable. We are a training company and making training easy is what we focus on. We can only grow if people find out about us. In my presentation, I will be talking about how to “message” what it is we are doing so the most stakeholders understand.
