To continue our 2017 Speaker Spotlight series, we welcome our newest main stage addition, Boyan Slat!
Speaker Spotlight
At just 22 years old, Dutch inventor and entrepreneur Boyan Slat will take to the Nordic Business Forum stage in Helsinki to discuss responsibility. Focusing on the world’s waste problem, Slat has called it a “ticking time bomb” that we need to diffuse.
Slat is the founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, a foundation that develops and implements technology to eliminate plastic in the world’s oceans. Some of its most notable endeavors to date have been the Mega Expedition, which used manta trawls to measure the concentration, spatial and size distribution of plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and the Aerial Expedition, which calculated and quantified the largest pieces of debris.
In 2018, The Ocean Cleanup will begin its greatest feat yet: extracting plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Initial parts of the cleanup system are already in production. Owing to an improved design, the foundation claims to have significantly increased its system’s efficiency. The group expects to be able to clean half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in as little as five years.
The Ocean Cleanup
Slat has said: “At The Ocean Cleanup we are always looking for ways to make the cleanup faster, better and cheaper. Today is another important day in moving in that direction. The cleanup of the world’s oceans is just around the corner. Due to our attitude of ‘testing to learn’ until the technology is proven, I am confident that – with our expert partners – we will succeed in our mission.”
