Speaker Spotlight
Normal sounds pretty good most of the time. Whether you’re giving a company presentation or visiting your relatives, most of us try not to stand out too much. We follow the rules and conform — but not originals. Originals challenge the status quo. They look for alternatives and improvements. They seek to make the world a better place.
Enter Dr. Adam Grant, an author, psychologist, and professor at Wharton School of Business. In his 2016 book Originals: How Non-Conformists Change the World, Grant discusses the habits of people who choose to take the road less traveled and come up with creative solutions that revolutionize the world. In an interview with the Washington Post, Grant said, “I don’t think we have a shortage of creative ideas in the world. I think where the shortage exists is that people don’t know how to champion them.”
And those who do champion great ideas — people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates — are more relatable than you may think. In Originals, Grant writes:
“After spending years studying [originals] and interacting with them, I am struck that their inner experiences are not any different from our own. They feel the same fear, the same doubt, as the rest of us. What sets them apart is that they take action anyway. They know in their hearts that failing would yield less regret than failing to try.”
Worried you don’t have what it takes? Grant thinks that you do.
